Great Stuff Disk
Just about all of this stuff is available on the web, but if you don't have the time and/or bandwidth to download all this Great Stuff, you can order a copy of it all on CD! It's actually three CDs (or a single DVD, if you like), full of over a gigabyte in hundreds of great free (and some not free) programs and updates. Items that are not available for download are also not included on the disks.
- Bible
Nothing beats a paper and ink volume for reading Scripture, but computers are wonderful when it comes to searching! Words, phrases (even into the Greek and Hebrew), topics, cross-references - all work together to let you focus on your study instead of spending time flipping pages. Here are the tools I use on my PC and my Palm. Even though the software is free, not all Bible versions are free, so what you choose determines how much you spend. (23.31MB in 10 programs)
- Games
What makes a good game? There are so many games, and so much junk, that it's hard for me to justify spending money on them! I have purchased many games, of course, but here are the free gems from my (not particularly fanatical) gaming experience. I like a puzzle, but it has to be fun while it's at it. (841.60MB in 30 programs) - Internet
The internet isn't new anymore, and it isn't free to make or distribute anything. The free online services have all but died out, and people (like me) are starting to want some compensation for hours and hours of hard labor making that cool tool. Here are a bunch that are still mostly free. (52.37MB in 19 programs) - Learning
Kind of like with my opinion on using the Bible on the computer, I don't think computers help much. Computer screens are much more difficult than paper to read, and of course writing on a computer screen won't get you very far (unless you're lucky enough to have a TabletPC!). Education on computers - in my opinion - is best applied in areas like games, testing, and searching. Leave reading to paper, believe me. Maybe once paper-like resolution screens and OSes are a reality . . . . (7.81MB in 7 programs) - Photo
I like taking pictures, but I also like to use the pictures I have! That's why I've built a whole custom database-backed cataloguing system for our photos. Here are a few tools that have helped me built it. (8.16MB in 5 programs) - Tools
Here is a miscellaneous list of tools I've found to be worth their wait in download. (62.93MB in 22 programs) - Updates
Patches and updates, especially for Windows. Try downloading them from their sources first (their connections are a lot faster, and you can download them all at once), but in the likely event they've made them unavailable, you can download most them from my site, or get them on the Great Stuff CD. (Note that Microsoft updates are not available from this site or on the Great Stuff CD.) (729.32MB in 41 programs) - Viewers
What's a viewer? This category holds all those tool, utilities, and programs that actually create and/or view content, except for Internet-specific stuff, which gets its own category. (138.71MB in 32 programs)
