Goals

1. Teach the Law De 6
   
• De 6.2; 4:10; 11:19
  
• Fear the Lord your God
  
• Keep his statutes and commandments
  
• For a prolonged life
  
• So the child can know:
  
• Confidence in God Ps 78:7
  
• His own sin  Rom 7:7-9
  
• Grace
  
• Mercy
  
• Lovingkindness
  
• Fathers and mothers
  
• Eph 6:4 - Instruction
  
• 2Ti 1:5, 3:15 - and grandmother!
  
2. Teach History
   
• The Passover Ex 12
  
• Ex 12:27 - He spared our lives
  
• The sacrifice of the firstborn Ex 13
  
• Ex 13:15 - God claims the firstborn
  
• The monument in the middle of the Jordan Jos 4:6-7, 22-24
  
• An unusual location - draws attention
  
• Take great pains to make a big deal of remembering God's great works in our lives, to make Him real for them Ps 71:18, Is 28:19
  
• They should be aware of God's works in their own lives Ps 71:17
  
3. Teach by Example
   
• De 6:17 - Diligently obey God
  
• De 6:18 - Do right
  
• De 6:20 - Your children know:
  
• The laws of God
  
• They are precious and valuable to you
  
• You can explain what they mean
  
• You've decided to follow God Jos 24:15
  
• De 11:20 - Write them on your doorposts (or fridge?)
  
4.  Raise them right
   
• Eph 6:4 - In the discipline and instruction of the Lord, without provocation to anger
  
• Pr 4:2 - Give sound teaching
  
• Pr 19:18 - hope in life
  
• Pr 23:14 - Rescue them from hell with discipline
  
• Pr 29:15 - Give wisdom in rod & reproof
  
• Heb 12:9-10 - To be consistent with God's treatment of His sons
  
• 1Ti 3:4, 3:12 - Keeps children under control
  
5. Love them
   
• Mothers:
  
• Ge 21:16 - Hagar didn't want Ishmael to die
  
• Ex 2:3 - Moses' mother did all she could to preserve him
  
• Disobeyed the law
  
• Trusted God in sending him down the river
  
• Samuel's mother Hannah gave him up for God's work
  
• 1Sa 1:11 - She had promised him to God
  
• 1Sa 2:21 - She had 5 more kids
  
• Tit 2:4 - Love their children
  
• Fathers
  
• Mr 5:23 - Jairus pleaded with Jesus to heal his daughter
  
• Lu 15:20 - The prodigal's father unconditionally welcomed him home
  
• Col 3:21 - Don't frustrate them
  
6. Learn to love God
   
• And accept Him as Savior
  
7. Begs Personal Responsibility
   
• I have to know the law
• I have to live the law
  
8. Illustrate with a lawn
   
• Requires water
  
• Requires food
  
• Requires cutting
  
• Requires weeding 

None of these can be skipped for a nice lawn. The lawn will grow regardless, but without water will be withered and weak, without food will be faded and sickly, with cutting will be uneven and scraggly, and without weeding will be completely mixed up with junk.
