Dreams and visions in the Bible were a unique method God used to communicate with people, especially prophets Num 12:6, Joel 2:28.
- Isaiah has a harsh vision Is 1:1, Is 21:2
- Ezekiel was transported by means of a vision Ez 11:24-25
- Ezekiel's vision of the valley of bones Ez 37:1-14
- Ezekiel's vision of the great river Ez 47:1-12
- Daniel vision of the horns, as well as the interpretation Dan 8:1-27
- Amos, Obadiah, and Nahum had visions of what they were supposed to say Amos 1:1,Ob 1:1,Nah 1:1
In addition to prophets, there were many "non-prophets" that had dreams and visions, too:
- Abimelech had a dream from God to leave Sarai alone Gen 20:3-7
- Jacob's ladder dream Gen 28:12-16
- Joseph's sheaves and star dreams Gen 37:5-11
- The cupbearer's and baker's trio dreams Gen 40:5-19
- Pharoah's fat and lean dreams Gen 41:1-32
- Gideon's man's bread dream Judges 7:13-15
- Solomon's wise dream 1Kings 3:5-15
- Nebuchadnezzar's unknown dream Dan 2:1-45
- Nebuchadnezzar's tree dream Dan 4:5-37
- Joseph's dream to stay with Mary Mat 1:20
- The magi's dream to go home Mat 2:12
- Joseph's dream to return home Mat 2:19
- Joseph's dream to go to Nazareth Mat 2:23
- Pilate's wife's dream about Jesus Mat 27:19
What's the difference between a dream and a vision? Here are some more visions:
- Abram's vision that he would have a son Gen 15:1-6
- Jacob's vision that it was OK to go to Egypt Gen 46:2-4
- Ananias' vision to take care of Paul Acts 9:10-16
- Cornelius' vision of how to get help Act 10:3-7
- Peter's vision of the sheet full of animals Acts 10:9-16
- Paul's vision of the Macedonian man Acts 16:9-10
- Paul's vision to keep speaking Acts 18:9-11
- Paul's vision to leave Jerusalem Acts 22:18-21
- Paul's vision that he would be in Rome, too Acts 23:11
- Paul's vision of Jesus Rev 1:12-17
Is there a difference at all? Both seem to deal with providing direction, whether in writing a book of prophecy or in determine the course of a man's life.God speaks in both. The only distinction seems to be that dreams come while the person is asleep, whereas visions while the person is awake; hmm.
