With Google's recent release of their Google Pack collection of free software, I thought I'd chime in with my recommendations:
And, if you're not running Windows XP SP2,
- Firefox - better web browsing
- Cute PDF Writer - easy PDF creation
- Picasa - extraordinarly simple photos management
- Open Office - work with Word and Excel and more without spending hundreds
- AVG Antivirus - keep the viruses away
- Ad-Aware - clean up the junk
If you use Microsoft Outlook (not Express),
- ZoneAlarm - essential firewall
Regardless of what email program you use now, consider
- SpamBayes - intelligent anti-spam
